JBAD receives an American Architecture Award
Best New 2007 Building Design in the USA for Brunson Lofts

COLUMBUS, OHIO – The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architec-
ture and Design and Metropolitan Arts Press, Ltd. recently announced
the thirty-five new distinguished buildings in the United States that it
selected for the museum’s prestigious 2007 American Architecture
Awards program. Jonathan Barnes Architecture & Design received
this award for the Brunson Building Lofts in Columbus, Ohio.

“The American Architecture Awards have become one of the most
prestigious awards for public recognition of excellence in architecture
in the United States, both nationally and internationally, so we are hon-
ored to have the Brunson Building Lofts be one of this year’s winners,”
said Jonathan Barnes, Principal of Jonathan Barnes Architecture &
Design.

Established more than 10 years ago, the awards honor and celebrate
the most outstanding accomplishments for new architecture designed
and built in the United States by leading American and international
architecture firms practicing in the United States. The projects are aw-
arded based on new cutting-edge design direction, urban philosophy,
design approach, style, and intellectual substance in American
architecture today.

The Brunson Lofts was the only project in Ohio to win this award and
the only urban high-rise building. Other noteworthy 2007 award win-
ners included the Apple Store Fifth Avenue, Santa Monica Public Lib-
rary, Mission Valley East Light Rail Project and the Penn State Univer-
sity School of Architecture & Landscape Architecture. Other projects
selected included new corporate headquarters, schools and universi-
ties, libraries, art museums, foundation headquarters, transit projects,
lofts, residences and single-family homes. For a full list of the award
winners, visit: www.chi-athenaeum.org

This year’s jury for awards took place in Dublin, Ireland (May, 2007)
under the auspices of the Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland
and with the participation of noted Irish architectural practitioners, edu-
cators, government leaders and architectural journalists.

“The wide geographic distribution of these awards attests to the
importance of the program,” states Christian K. Narkiewicz-Laine,
curator of the American Architecture Awards. “There is no one, single
program that brings together the latest cutting-edge international arch-
itecture today as one cohesive universal platform of American design.”

About the Brunson Lofts

A turn-of-the-century, Chicago Style office building, the Brunson Build-
ing has been converted to 22 luxury residential condominiums. The
project, developed by Long & Wilcox, involved the renovation of this
historic 12-story structure located on a tight urban site. The project
addressed the complex aesthetic, structural and functional issues re-
lated to a modernist addition to a historic urban high-rise. The addition,
a full height steel and glass structure, was designed to gain more area
for the residential units. The new tower addition creates a successful
financial pro forma for the project, a new architectural identity for the
building’s new use and an important urban infill in the downtown neigh-
borhood.
