JBAD Selected for OSU-CAR Feasibility
Study and Renovation

Jonathan Barnes Architecture and Design has been selected to produce a feasibility study and conceptual design for a new facility for the Ohio State University’s Center for Automotive Research – CAR.

CAR is an interdisciplinary research center in the College of Engineering whose mission is to conduct innovative research in support of the automotive industry and to educate future leaders in transportation. The current 35,000 sq. ft. building is expected to be largely replaced with a state-of-the-art facility featuring new offices, classrooms, labs, meeting spaces and “high-bay” research spaces to provide additional research capability for topics such as energy for transportation and sustainable mobility, new technologies for vehicle power and propulsion and for reduced exhaust emissions, and increased safety and electronics content in automobiles. A three-story addition would add approximately 40,000 square feet to the facility and allow for continuous operation during construction.

The study includes a conceptual design of the new building which incorporates a continuous curvilinear wall integrating both the new and existing structures. The high-tech envelope, based upon the profile of a Ferrari and constructed of a highgloss metallic silver cladding resolves the new with the old and re-imagines CAR as a forward looking place of advanced technology and innovation. The high-bay spaces will be exposed to the double-height public entry, creating a “showroom” laboratory.
