JBAD Initiates Office Research Fellowship
Jonathan Barnes Architecture and Design has created the JBAD Research Traveling Fellowship Program to recognize its talented and dedicated architects and to bring the officeÕs commitment to high-quality, innovative design to a new level. With this fellowship, JBAD will sponsor research travel, twice yearly, to architecturally significant locations anywhere in the U.S., Europe or Latin America as proposed by the recipient.
Participating associates will observe, investigate and analyze specific architecture, environments and events and present their results to their JBAD colleagues and other interested groups. The fellowship gives JBAD architects the opportunity to experience first-hand the examples of noteworthy and avant-garde architecture and design JBAD uses as inspiration for its client's projects.
The first associate to be selected for the Fellowship is Sam Rosenthal, who traveled to Amsterdam last month. While in Amsterdam, Rosenthal studied current trends in Dutch housing design – both renovation and new construction – focusing on new construction technologies. Follow Rosenthal's photo tour of the Borneo Sporenburg Development. Innovative in its reinterpretation of the single-house form for a high-density area, the master plan for this development was based on a new response to the familiar demands of single-family housing and generous private outdoor space, a secure parking space, safety
and individuality.
MVRDV's design for the Silodam housing complex groups apartments by type and size into"mini-neighborhoods" eachrepresenting a specific type of dwelling, structural type and facade, and each independent of one another.

Take a look inside the house of the future, UN Studios' Living Tomorrow Amsterdam project, featuring intelligent climate control, a kitchen with automatic waste separation system, and a system for re-using rain water. The architects incorporate multiple ways to interface with rooms, a kitchen that continuously gathers information and offers menu options, and a bathroom that reminds you to brush
your teeth.
